Upcoming DFW Homesteading Classes
Gluten Free Sourdough with Deborah Hawkins — Saturday, August 23, 2025
10am to 12:00pm Noon – $40 per student
Join us as we dive into the art of gluten-free sourdough baking! In this class, we’ll explore the full process—from nurturing a healthy starter to creating beautiful, delicious loaves and treats. You’ll learn what your starter should look and smell like at each stage, how humidity can impact your dough, and which ingredient combinations have worked best for Deborah over the years. We’ll start with a recipe that she loves and she’ll teach us how to substitute with different flours to accommodate multiple dietary restrictions. We’ll also cover shaping techniques, what a good rise should look like, and how to take your basic loaf to the next level—like hearty grain loaves, cinnamon rolls, and buns!
Sure, you could follow a recipe on your own or watch an online video, but there’s no substitute for having an experienced baker to ask questions to in real time. You’ll see the bubbles that signal a lively starter, feel the bounce of the dough to know when it’s ready to bake and smell that distinct yummy perfectly sour loaf as it cooks in the oven.
We’ll spend about an hour and a half walking through the process step-by-step, followed by 30 minutes for questions, conversation, and troubleshooting. If you’d like to stick around afterward, bring a gluten-free dish to share—let’s enjoy a potluck lunch together and make some new friends while we “break bread.”
