Excellent question. When analyzing factors to determine which food to feed those you love, the “certified organic” label is just one factor to consider. As a mom, I used to think that “organic” was the highest level of nutrition I could feed my family. And that might be the case if you only shop at a supermarket. But now that I am on the production side, I understand a little more. If you offered me the choice between a chicken breast with an organic sticker from a grocery store or a non-labeled, pasture raised chicken who was free to roam, I would choose the latter in a heartbeat. According to a study done by APPPA, pasture-raised chickens have a better Omega 6:3 ratio, much higher levels of Vitamin D3, twice the levels of Vitamin E and less cholesterol than even chickens labeled free range and organic from the grocery store. The food that chickens consume is just one piece of the puzzle – fresh vegetation, bugs, sunshine and exercise are other factors involved in the health of an animal.
At Crunchy Mama Farms, we nurture the land and the animals. We choose not to feed our animals soy to quicken their growth or give them antibiotic-laced feed. Our chickens live their best lives and are free to act like chickens do. They hunt grasshoppers and worms, scratch the ground and aerate the soil, can breathe easily in the open air and feel the warmth of the sunshine. We absolutely treat our animals humanely, but we don’t have a sticker for that either.
